Koreans are Organized

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Stepped outside minutes after the first Korean game of the World Cup ended to catch a parade of 50 some odd young koreans marching down eglinton all dressed in red and accessorized with assorted “red devil” paraphenelia-thundersticks, 태극기 (taegukki- the south korean flag), and horned hats. Lead with a megaphone and the banging of a large drum, they clapped, shouted and sang cheers in unison all the way down to yonge. It was very cool. Kinda neat to see the tools and strategies of student and labour politics also being put to good use during international sporting events. I felt sorta proud.

Buffy Rocks

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Am totally loving season 7 of Buffy. i would almost recommend watching all previous 6 seasons just to fully appreciate this one- though there are a couple weak episodes in the middle. Still, really impressed with the writing. Not that it’s literary genius or anything- far, far from it. Buffy is alot like Keanu’s acting- accessible in that “i can see what you’re getting at” kind of way. its an good learning tool to help students develop an understanding and appreciation for writing- its like textbook examples of story and character archs, allegory, irony, genre conventions and their subversion…i think this is what you should start students off with in their english classes and then ease them into shakespeare.

or maybe i just like crap?

11 More Days

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Starting my second job has put me well on my way to enjoying The Lake House at maximum capacity. Not only am I more tired, I’m also mal/undernourished. In between shifts and sleeping, I managed to squeeze in 2.5 hours of Buffy. Got weepy in each and every episode. Excellent progress.

TORY CASSIS
Had a run-in with Tory Cassis outside the Reservoir Lounge a few weeks ago. D and I had parked across the street from the Res and we caught Mr. Cassis outside taking a break between sets. After much hemming and hawing and with a push from D, I went over to say hello and asked him about A Steeple Full of Swallows-the Tom Waits Tribute he and some local musicians organize every year. The date always seems to move around between May and September and I’ve missed it multiple times despite obsessive scouring of Eye/Now listings and google searches.

Anyhoo, he was lovely. Very courteous and charming and quite handsome. i must say, i was pretty elated for the rest of evening. It was really rather nice having him looking down at me. And he was so very attentive….I really don’t have much else to say which is unfortunate as i wish i could reminisce a little more….Did i mention he was lovely?

KEANU REEVES
I cannot explain why i am so enamoured with this man except to say that i find him very very attractive and appealing. I can’t even honestly say that I think he’s a bad actor (though i admit-like most actors- there are a couple weak performances in his film repetoire). I like him. whole heartedly. he’s dreamy.

Sometimes, I like to call his acting… accessible- in that, “i can see what you’re trying to get at” kind of way. But generally i think he does a bang up job. And really, when his performance is less than good, it is often at the very least, on par with the general quality of the production as a whole.

It’s gonna be a good summer- two new Reeves flicks to look forward to. I’ve been watching the trailer for The Lake House repeatedly at work. Since we’re in open cubicles, normally I wait for my coworkers to go home so i dont look like too much of a freak. I’m not sure how good a movie it’s going to be. Apparently the screenplay (adapted from the Korean film Il Mare or 시월 ) is by a pulitzer prize winner (the guy who wrote Proof) but judging from the trailer, the writing’s pretty generic and sloppy. I’m not worried though, the movie’s going to be AWESOME. I plan to get little sleep the night before and maybe have a couple drinks before i watch the flick. That’ll get me good and emotionally unstable/fragile and make me more vulnerable to the film’s weak character/plot devices. it’s gonna be good. i’m gonna cry. it’ll be beautiful.

You can watch the trailer here

THE POWER OF POETRY
you know what else is depressing? bad poetry- especially when i’m the one writing it.

Usually I have the sense to confine such drivel to the private pages of my journal, content to only fantasize that at their publication, accolades would come pouring in. But every once in a while i fancy that there may be some seed of truth/reality to my fantasies. I begin to imagine, to believe that the only obstacle to receiving the critical acclaim and recognition I so desire comes not from a lack of talent (oh no) but from my incredible modesty that has prevented the literary world from discovering my poetic genuis.

At one such moment, my friends, who were editors of the high school year book at the time, capitalized on this vanity-induced delusion and, desperate for submissions, persuaded me to share one of my pieces. It took its place with the other insipid poems published that year- all of them similiarly themed with cliched metaphors, the rhyming vocabulary of a 6th grader, an uneven meter, and (worst of all) deep earnestness. Here it is:

when she hurts you, i’ll be there
to listen to your heart
and i’ll be there to comfort you
when you two are apart
but even though i’m always there
to tell you to have faith
when i see you two together
it makes my small heart ache
all i think of day and night
is your flawless face
and when i shiver from the cold
i yearn for your embrace
i treasure every detail
yours eyes, the way you smile
and just by being near you
makes me feel my life’s worthwhile
I long for your affection,
if you could just belong to me
but because my love is true,
my heart will set you free
i wont tie you down,
all my feelings i will hide
i’ll accept it’s her you love,
and i’ll be satisfied
you’re happy when you’re with her
and so i’ll let things be
but i hope one day you’ll find
your happiness in me

I still can’t read it without wincing- particularly when i come across the words “yearn” and “flawless.” Not to mention the image it projects. I wish i could say that I had assumed another voice while writing, that it was a creative venture-dabbling in expressing different emotions and personas, but unfortunately- its pretty much all me: prepubescent, inferior, obsequious me.

Was flipping through old yearbooks with K a while back when i came across it again. The thought of K and 1999 other former students reading it still gives me a stomach ache sometimes. At least on my blog, i can post the poem in its proper context as opposed to the sense pride and accomplishment implied in its appearance in the yearbook.

ANOTHER SHORT ENTRY
One more month of school left and provided i get all my assignments in on time (hey, its possible!), i should be back to blogging full speed by mid spring. Until then, more jot notes:

    - you know what’s depressing? coming across a “to do” list you wrote last summer and finding 8 months later, you still cant cross anything off.

QUICK UPDATE
Its been a pretty busy new year with the two courses I’m taking at uoft so I haven’t had much time to update my blog with a well-edited piece. Things should calm down soon but in the meantime, a brief condensed list of things I’d blog about if I had time:

    - my coworker cant spell or read. When she relays call info over the phone to tech, she does not read the words properly. When our tech corrects her, she apologizes for pronouncing the word wrong. This is an inaccurate assessment of what is happening. I tutor a grade three student in reading. When she says ‘circumference’ instead of the word ‘circumstances’, I do not attribute that to mispronunciation. Similarly, saying ‘cartier’ when its ‘caraquet’ is not an error in pronunciation.

    - Dad likes lists but uses them inappropriately as conversational material. For example, if you ask him about his experience flying first class, he will talk about the wide range of fruit that was available for consumption and then, at a slow and steady pace, begin to list them off (in singular): apple, orange, banana, strawberry, pineapple, pear, grape, blueberry, watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, peach. Likewise, when observing that it is interesting how every country has its own tradition of literature, he will proceed to rhyme off countries with their own tradition of literature (there are presently almost 200 independent countries in the world).

    - Was in the car driving home listening to john tesh radio show (I am a closet easy rock listener). John Tesh had a juicy tidbit about singles and where they all hang out in upcoming segment. I stopped for gas. As a result, didn’t catch segment. Now feel that I have missed out on vital piece of information that was to put me on course to living happily ever after with man of dreams. Suspect life trajectory has veered sharply towards solitary life where an older, more obese version of myself is spending her nights on the couch with chicken wings and ice cream watching movies from her extensive home dvd collection of keanu reeves.

MY WATER BOTTLE
Cranberry juice in the water bottle today. Made thorough inspection before consuming. Thought it smelled a little sudsy when i went to take a sip. also tasted it a bit strange. Exercising caution. Later on in day, opened lid, large soap bubble blarbled out of bottle as i removed top. Discarding contents.

Happy New Year!

MORE JUNK
just realized my water bottle containing orange juice that i have been drinking all morning has mold in it!!!!! black spots all over the side of the one wall. *stomach churns*.

STOMACH ACHE
feeling sick. have frequented washroom facilities repeatedly today. wondering what could be the cause.
looking back on what i’ve ingested in the past 24hrs, there are so many possibilities: the macdonalds breakfast burrito i had this morning, the congealed fettuccine alfredo i nuked for lunch, the two pizza pockets i ate last night before bed…

i need to stop eating junk.
